Malta Airways was formed in 1946, initially with BOAC and later with BEA as shareholder. The airline took over its competitor Air Malta in 1950. The merged airlines became known as The Malta Airlines and operated in co-operation with BEA using the latter's aircraft until a new Air Malta was created as Malta's national airline in 1973.
