The Military Air Transport Service - MATS of the Department of Defense (though operated by the United States Air Force), was set up in 1948 to be responsible for all U.S. military transport requirements. The basis of MATS was the previous Air Transport Command of the USAF together with personnel and aircraft transferred from the Naval Air Transport Service - NATS of the United States Navy.

In early 1966, MATS was disestablished and succeeded by the Military Airlift Command - MAC, set up by the U.S. Air Force.
