MATS, the Military Air Transport Service of the United States Air Force, was set up in 1948 to be responsible for all U.S. military transport requirements. The basis of MATS was the previous Air Transport Command of the USAF (earlier USAAF), and personnel and aircraft from NATS, the Naval Air Transport Service of the United States Navy, were transferred to the new command.
