The company, originally involved in general aviation, maintenance etc, was formed in the 1930s
as Veljekset Karhumäki. It operated its first scheduled route in 1950 and was soon trading as
Karhumäki Airways. The airline became Kar-Air in 1957 following a reorganisation. The longest
air route in Europe (Helsinki-Malaga, for a short while extended to Tenerife) was operated in the
early 1960s. Financial problems caused Finnair to take over the airline in 1963. Only a few local
services in Finland were retained when Kar-Air (from 1980 Karair) concentrated on passenger and
freight charters. Karair was eventually merged into Finnair in 1996.
