Loftleiðir - Icelandic Airlines
Iceland
Loftleiðir was founded in 1944, at first operating domestic routes. These were handed over to the other
Icelandic airline, Flugfélag Íslands, in 1952. Meanwhile, Loftleiðir had
started international routes,
eventually concentrating on low-fare transatlantic flights.
In 1973, Loftleiðir and Icelandair (Flugfélag Íslands), joined forces through a
holding company,
Flugleiðir. The two airlines operated alongside, until they were finally
completely merged as Flugleiðir
in 1979. Internationally, the new airline retained
the name Icelandair for promotional reasons.
